Bio
Ron Newman received his initial piano technician training in 1979 from Leon Speir of Dallas, past president of the National Piano Technicians’ Guild.

Ron has a M.S. in Computer Science and a M.M.E. in Music Education with Piano Concentration, both from the University of North Texas.

His Master’s thesis was the creation of a computer peripheral device for measuring pitch which later became a commercial product. He also wrote a paper around that time proposing differing historical tuning temperaments for the various sections of an orchestra. As a pianist he has performed as concerto soloist and in a wide variety of classical, jazz, and popular settings. As a band member he toured the Far East and shared the stage with Willie Nelson, The Young Dubliners, and Tricia Clark. He also scored the music for PBS documentaries on women bronc riders, I’ll Ride That Horse, and the wolves’ re-introduction into Yellowstone Park. As a songwriter his song ‘The River’ was the impetus for a compilation by Nashville songwriters – including Janis Ian, Kostas, and others – on environmental themes, sponsored by Warner Bros. Western. As a teacher – Assistant Band Director at Olney High School, Texas – he was fortunate to watch their rapid ascent under the direction of Head Director Ben Hoaldridge, ultimately winning the Texas State Concert Band Championship.

Regulation
In addition to tuning, you may request concert regulation. This involves numerous adjustments to compensate for the effects of wear and time on your piano and bring it as close as possible to new playing condition. A piano in good regulation has a consistent feel, the ability to be expressive at any dynamic, and a tone that pleases you. It typically takes 6-8 hours and includes tuning.

Tuning Base rate: $135
Regulation: $90/hr.

  1. Thank you Ron so very much for your services.. The second hand upright piano that we purchased for my daughter sounds amazing now…thanks to you. WE ARE SO HAPPY.

  2. Ron did an amazing job with my Knabe baby grand. It was built more than 70 years ago and hadn’t been tuned in year. Ron gave it a thorough going over and fixed a couple of small cracks in the soundboard, re-glued the pedal assembly and tuned it. He worked for hours and we are thrilled with the results, and the reasonable price for his skilled work. He is a though professional, arrives on time and does great work. He also provided me with a condition report that will be useful going forward.

  3. I would like to give Ron my highest possible recommendation. My Steinway B had not been tuned in two years due to a move from Texas to New Mexico, and Covid. I am ultra-picky about the piano technicians I hire; only two have tuned this piano in almost 40 years. I contacted Ron based upon his reviews and website. After a friendly exchange of emails and calls he drove up to Angel Fire from Santa Fe for a modest distance fee. He is very personable, an expert technician, a very accomplished pianist, and his rates are reasonable. He spent more than an hour using his strobe for the basic mathematical tuning and then another hour fine-tuning the idiosyncrasies of my instrument aurally. The result? The tuning is stellar and my piano sounds fantastic! I cannot imagine entrusting my piano to anybody else as long as I live in northern New Mexico. Thank you Ron for such a first-rate job!

  4. Several weeks ago, Ron did a superb job of tuning my Baldwin SD-10 concert grand, also overhauling my piano’s humidifier system, a necessity in Santa Fe’s dry climate. Ron’s expertise in tuning my SD-10 concert grand was done not only expertly, but at fair cost, with thoughtfulness and attention to detail. He is a gentleman and true professional, a pleasure to have in one’s house.

Honestly, your work on the Steinway at Santa Fe Unity is astounding.
